Sunnyside is a quiet, residential community in the Western portion of Queens. The exact boundaries of the neighborhood are somewhat loosely defined, but the Newtown Creek and Northern Boulevard from the North and South boundaries. Sunnyside borders Long Island City to the West, Astoria to the North, Woodside to the East and Maspeth to the South.

With its picturesque view of the Manhattan skyline, Sunnyside is a charming suburb for New York residents. It was one of the city’s first planned communities and to this day it’s still one of the most coveted neighborhoods in Queens. It features a quick commute to Manhattan and plenty of dining and entertainment options within the neighborhood. Sunnyside has an oddly urban yet suburban feel that gives residents the amenities of the city with the repose of the suburb.

History of Sunnyside, Queens

Sunnyside Gardens is listed as one of the oldest planned communities in America and was constructed between 1924 and 1928. The development consisted of one to three family row houses with private gardens. The area became a middle-class haven for German, Irish, Dutch and Eastern European families. During the Great Depression, many residents were evicted from their homes and the city elected to preserve the courtyards, walkways and gardens through forty-year easements that allowed city workers to maintain these areas. These easements lapsed in the 1960’s causing a mad dash of residents to snatch up the formerly protected gardens and courtyards around their homes. Sunnyside Gardens was officially declared a landmark in 2008 and legal actions have been taken to preserve the neighborhood’s historic character.

Demographics of Sunnyside, Queens

The population of Sunnyside is just over 50,000. It’s an ethnically diverse neighborhood. Forty three percent of residents identify as Hispanic, 29% identify as white and 25% identify as Asian. It’s mainly a neighborhood of young professionals who like the quick commute to Manhattan, but there is a sizable population of families as well. Twenty-two percent of residents are between the ages of 25 and 34, 33% are between the ages of 35 and 54 and 17% are under the age of 18. It’s a middle to upper middle-class neighborhood and the average income is around $64,000.

Transportation in Sunnyside, Queens

There are several transportation options available to Sunnyside residents. The 7 train makes several stops at 33rd- Rawson Street, 40th Street-Lowery Street and 46 Street-Bliss Street. The E, M and R trains also make stops in Sunnyside at 36th Street. The Q32, Q39, Q60, Q104 buses also make stops in Sunnyside. Many residents of Sunnyside are drivers and the Long Island Expressway, and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway are accessible to residents of Sunnyside. Plus, the Sunnyside Yard services Amtrak, New Jersey Transit and the LIRR, giving residents options for escaping the city.

The apartments in Sunnyside are split between the one to three family Hudson-brick apartment buildings in Sunnyside Gardens and large, Art Deco walk ups. The buildings typically feature spacious, pre-war apartments. There are a handful of new developments scattered here and there, however there has been a push to preserve the architectural character of the neighborhood and therefore most buildings were erected in the 1920’s and 30’s. Co-ops are common in the neighborhood and housing prices are relatively cheap for being so accessible to Manhattan. Some of the best restaurants in the city can be found in Sunnyside and there are plenty of cool neighborhood shops and bars residents can enjoy. Sunnyside is a neighborhood that exemplifies the cultural melting pot that is Queens. Manhattan is just a quick train ride away, giving residents access to even more activities. The development of the 7-train line has brought renewed interest to developers looking to turn Sunnyside into another Long Island City or Astoria. It’s still a good time to buy because that change has yet to take place. But those interested in the area are wise to buy soon before things change.

Is Sunnyside Safe?

Yes, Sunnyside is very safe. The area is patrolled by the 108th precinct of the NYPD, which has reported a significant drop off in crime since the 1990’s. The violent crime rate is less than the city as a whole and there is little property crime. Sunnyside is a quiet, suburban neighborhood that doesn’t attract much of a criminal element. That part of Queens is among the safest areas in the city and most residents report that crime is of little issue.

Are the Schools in Sunnyside Good?

Yes the schools in Sunnyside are good. For elementary school, PS150Q Sunnyside and PS 199 Maurice Fitzgerald are in Sunnyside and have received good marks in terms of test scores and student to teacher ratio. IS 125 Thomas McCann is a highly regarded middle school in the neighborhood and  PS 150Q also services 6th and 7th grade. There are several good high schools in Sunnyside as well, like the Academy of Finance and Enterprise, Aviation Career and Technical High School and Robert F Wagner Junior Secondary School. However high school students are free to apply to any public high school in New York City.
