About Forest Hills, Queens

Forest Hills is characterized by its rows of ornate Tudor homes with landscaped lawns. Austin St. is one of the busier sections of the neighborhood, where you can find a ton of restaurants and nightlife. If you need green space there’s Forest Park, which is home to a popular golf course, and nearby Flushing Meadows Corona Park, one of the biggest green spaces in the city.

The History of Forest Hills, Queens

Once Lenape farmland, this area became a 600 acre plot of land called Whitepot when it was settled by the Dutch back 1652. The community of Forest Hills Gardens became the nation’s first planned community in 1906 and is based on the English “Garden Cities” concept, which promised to create verdant, self-sufficient villages near reliable transit. With its comely Tudor Mansions, lush greenery, and cobblestoned plaza at the foot of the LIRR station, Forest Hills Gardens is a one-of-a-kind community in NYC and remains highly desirable (and exclusive) to this day. The neighborhood continued to expand throughout the 20th Century, and by the 1970s the neighborhood was attracting immigrants from Iran, India, Israel, and the Soviet Union.
