The History of Cobble Hill

Once home to the Lenape Canarsee tribe, the area known as Cobble Hill was settled by the Dutch in the 1640s and later became home to a British military fort that played an important role in the revolutionary war. By 1834, Cobble Hill became part of the newly chartered Village of Brooklyn, and remained largely rural until ferry service opened. Cobble Hill soon became a favorite among wealthy Manhattan bankers who enjoyed the neighborhood’s charm and proximity to Wall St. Today, Cobble Hill is a designated historic district thanks to its well-preserved brownstones and turn-of-the-century storefronts, and remains popular with families.
