Jackson Heights is a great option if you’re looking for the hustle and bustle of city life at a more affordable price. There’s a lot of recently constructed, large apartment buildings in the area, but there’s also still plenty of Tudor-style houses and distinctive garden apartments around. The neighborhood’s character is defined by its large Bengali, Colombian, and Nepalese communities.

There’s 5 subway lines running through here that can get you to Manhattan in under 30 minutes, but light sleepers are forewarned – the elevated 7 train isn’t exactly quiet.

The History of Jackson Heights, Queens

The neighborhood was designed along the British “Garden City” concept, and was meant to serve as a leafy refuge for middle class families looking to escape the crowded tenements of Manhattan. The new “Garden City” apartment complexes were elegant, Tudor-Style buildings built around open gardens and courtyards, and were notoriously exclusive to White Anglo-Saxons. As sucht wasn’t until 1940 that immigrants from Eastern Europe and Puerto Rico were allowed to move into the neighborhood. Since then Jackson Heights has drawn immigrants from all over Asia, Europe, and South America to become one of the most diverse places on the planet.

In 2018, there were more than 101,000 people living in Jackson Heights. There are more families with children here than in other neighborhoods, even though the median age of 44 is significantly higher than the citywide average of 36.  Most people here were born outside of the USA and many hail from Colombia, Ecuador, the Philippines, and Bangladesh. The median income here is slightly below the NYC average and people here are slightly less likely to hold a Bachelor’s degree.

Southern Jackson Heights is very well served by transit, and commuters can hop on the 7, E, F, M, or R trains for 15-minute trips to Midtown Manhattan. The northern side of Jackson Heights is a bit of a train desert however there are several express buses along Northern Blvd. that can shuttle you into Manhattan during rush hour. Trips to La Guardia airport are a breeze on the 33 and 70 buses.

A lot of the Garden City apartments have very strict pet policies, however there are plenty of veterinarians and dog sitters around here, ensuring that your furry friend will be well taken care of.

Is Jackson Heights Good for Cycling?

Yes. Despite its name Jackson Heights is essentially flat, and there are well-marked bike lanes along 31st and 34th Ave as well as along 74, 75, 81, and 82 sts, the latter of which can connect commuters to the protected bikeway along Queens Blvd.  There are several local bike shops around here, including the popular Hospital de Bicicletas on 93 St. Jackson Heights does not currently have any bike share stations but this is slated to change by 2023.

3 Things to Know Before Moving to Jackson Heights, Queens

  1. Northern Jackson Heights sits adjacent to La Guardia Airport and the Grand Central Parkway - expect lots of noise from aircraft and passing trucks in this area.

  2. There isn’t much public green space around here, so access to a private courtyard or garden may be particularly valuable to young families.

  3. The southern part of the neighborhood is slightly denser than the northern part, which gets increasingly more suburban towards the Grant Central expressway.
