About Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn

Colloquially known as Bed-Stuy since the 1940s, Bedford-Stuyvesant is one of the largest neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Bed-Stuy impresses visitors with low housing costs and proximity to Manhattan in addition to its beautiful architecture and noticeably relaxed pace. Don’t be surprised if you receive friendly greetings from locals as you walk around. This neighborhood is renowned for its sense of community.

In recent years, an influx of new tenants and businesses has increased the presence of lively cafes, bars, and restaurants. The neighborhood seems to be slowly following the path of nearby Williamsburg and Bushwick while managing to avoid the noisy nightlife and tourist traffic.

The History of Bedford-Stuyvesant

The Great Depression and racism forced 6 million African Americans to flee the American South. Harlem absorbed much of NYC’s share of “The Great Migration”, propelling it into fame as an important cultural hub. Harlem had provided affordable housing and public transport down to Lower Manhattan but became overpopulated.

Wealthy families were already moving to Bed-Stuy in search of larger homes with garages for their new automobiles. However, new subway stops motivated many in Harlem to “Take The A Train” (as Duke Ellington’s immortalized it) down to Brooklyn’s Little Harlem. Nowadays, Bed-Stuy is known for its diversity, hip-hop, and small-town hospitality. Notable residents include famous figures such as Jackie Robinson, Jay-Z, The Notorious B.I.G., and Chris Rock.

Median household income in 2018 was $55,910, about 14% less than the citywide median household income of $64,850. The median age is 31.6, much younger than the city’s median age of 36.9.

The neighborhood is known for containing the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District (designated in 2013) and having some of the best value brownstones in the whole city. Housing affordability in Bedford-Stuyvesant is still an acute problem even though almost two-thirds of all apartments are rent-stabilized or public housing.

Neighborhood Life in Bedford-Stuyvesant

Bed-Stuy’s neighborly atmosphere has proven capable of enduring a fast growth in population. It continues to be a calm neighborhood for NYC standards. Nightlife is better in Bushwick and Williamsburg, but you can expect lower prices and fewer distractions from Bed-Stuy.

Excitement for the area’s increase in popularity contrasts with fears of gentrification. Bed-Stuy’s legendary brownstones, gorgeous architecture, a quickly declining crime rate, welcoming tree-lined streets, and a growing culinary scene make it trendier by the second. Luckily, seconds still go by a little slower here than elsewhere in the city.
