Here's What Carrie Bradshaw's Lifestyle Would Cost In 2020

If you’ve ever dreamed of living in Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic NYC apartment, then we’re here to help make your dreams come true.

If you love watching television shows, then you’ve probably heard of Sex and the City. It is an American romantic comedy-drama television series on HBO that aired from 1998 to 2004. The show is an adaptation of the 1997 book “Sex and the City” by Candace Bushnell. Sex and the City aired for a total of 6 seasons and features the lives and friendship of four women in their late 30s and 40s living in NYC.

The four protagonists are Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York, Samantha Jones, and Miranda Hobbes. The TV series showcased various storylines where the women navigate through relationships and touch upon modern social issues such as sexuality, femininity, and promiscuity. Over the time of its six seasons, the series won 7 Emmy Awards, 8 Golden Globe Awards, and was one of TIME magazine’s “100 Best TV Shows of All-TIME:.

Carrie Bradshaw New York City

One of the four women in the show is Carrie Bradshaw, who was played by Sarah Jessica Parker and is the main protagonist of the show. Carrie is an author, freelance writer for Vogue Magazine in the later seasons, and columnist for The New York Star. Her weekly column for the newspaper was called “Sex and the City” and provided the narration for every episode. She lives in a brownstone on the Upper East Side of Manhattan at 245 E 73rd Street and according to the show, she paid only $700 a month for the rent-stabilized space.

According to Glassdoor, a columnist staff writer in NYC today would average $102,188 a year, which is around $8,515/month. Additionally, while Carrie only paid $700 a month for her apartment on the show, comparable apartments today on the Upper East Side would cost around $3,000 a month. Keep in mind that an apartment in the Upper East Side right now would cost an average of $2,182/month in a building with no doorman.

While Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment address in the show is 245 E 73rd Street, the apartment building doesn’t actually exist there. Instead, the exterior shots of her apartment with the stoop was filmed in the West Village at 64 Perry Street.

So where was the inside of Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment filmed if the space doesn’t really exist? While fans and tourists can come visit the iconic stoop featured on the show, unfortunately the interior of Carrie’s apartment was constructed on set at Silvercup Studios in Queens and was designed by Jeremy Conway to reflect Carrie’s personality.
